Concept

Our everyday lives are increasingly embedded in the digital space- the way our cities look, the way we interact with friends, the way we keep in touch with family, the way we express our opinions, the way we shop, date, take a ride – almost everything that we do on a daily basis is digitally mediated, so much so that it will not be exaggeration to say that we live in a digital society. Even as the notion of a digital society captures our imagination, do we understand its different facades?

The Winter School: Decoding the Digital, positioned at the intersection of social science and information technology, provided a sneak peek into interdisciplinary perspectives to understand different aspects of the emerging digital society.  It drew upon IIITB’s research in the area of IT & Society, consulting and other activities being undertaken at its Centre for IT and Public Policy (CITAPP) and its pioneering .

Themes for 2016

To streamline the conversation around digital society, this year we focused on two themes that are much talked about in the popular press as well as in academic discourses: Smart Cities and Social Media. Between these two themes we covered a wide range of topics ranging from smart communities to smart phones, from intelligent transportation to social activism, from e-governance to e-commerce, from big data to privacy and surveillance.

Programme Structure

The Winter School programme consisted of lectures, interactive discussions, video screenings and group activities. At the end of the three day programme, participants presented a poster on a specific aspect of the digital society discussed around the two specific themes.
