Description: V. Sridhar delivered an evening research talk titled “Telecom reforms in India: A chequered path” at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore on 11th May 2015.

Telecom revolution in India which started in the nineties has penetrated in to all geographies of the country including rural areas and across all sections of the society. India is today the second largest telecom market in the world, next only to China. The unique aspect of Indian telecom is the near exponential growth in mobile services and intense competition in the sector.However, telecom regulation and policy in India have had a chequered path. This talk will focus on two main aspects: (i) telecom licensing framework and (ii) radio spectrum assignment for mobile services in India. International comparisons are provided. Analysis and solutions for ushering in the next generation of telecom reforms is also presented.
