About the talk: What is fact-checking and how is it different from journalism? What is the role of technology in fact-checking? How effective are fact-checks in the fight against misinformation and disinformation? In a loosely structured session, H R Venkatesh tackles these and other interesting questions about the role of truth and facts in an era of information overload.

Speaker Bio: H R Venkatesh is Director, Training and Research at BOOM FactCheck, where he runs an initiative called ‘Media Buddhi’. Prior to joining BOOM, he was a John S. Knight Fellow in journalism at Stanford University. Venkatesh is a journalist and has previously been a founding editor at The Quint and a Senior Anchor at CNN-IBN. He is from Bangalore, but now lives in New Delhi. Venkatesh was educated at Bangalore, Symbiosis and Oxford universities.

CITAPP at IIIT Bangalore is an interdisciplinary think-tank set-up to focus on the policy challenges and the organizational demands made by technological innovation. Of particular interest to the Centre is how technological advances, along with institutional changes that harness the legitimacy and the powers of bureaucracies and market, address the needs of underserved communities.
