One platform, many worlds?: The precarity of platform workers in India
Taking the ICA theme of One World , One Network as its point of departure, this paper delves into the world of location-based platform work to understand how even a single digital platform contains within it many worlds and networks. More specifically, it examines how differently workers and customers on transportation, food delivery or grocery platforms experience that platform. Based on interviews of workers on prominent platforms in India between 2019 and 2021 as part of the global Fairwork project, this paper examines the many ways in which the workers and customers of these platforms experience data collection, informed consent and ratings on the platform. The paper concludes with some of the ways in which workers are attempting to reach out to customers for solidarity despite these gaps.
