Guest Talk by Prof. Gillian Hart titled ‘Beyond “Impact” Models: India and South Africa in the Age of Globalization’

Date: 15-12-2015

Description: Gillian Hart (University of California, Berkeley & University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg) delivered a lecture titled ‘Beyond “Impact” Models: India and South Africa in the Age of Globalization’ on 15th December 2015.

The term “globalization” often conjures up powerful technological and market forces that take shape in the core of the global economy. More often than not, discussions are cast in terms of the impact of globalization. In this talk, Gillian Hart spoke about the limits of “impact” models of globalization, and suggested a different frame of understanding. She also outlined similarities and differences in economic, political, and social change in India and South Africa since the early 1990s, often seen as the onset of the “age of globalization”.

Gillian Hart is Professor of Geography and Chair of Development Studies at the University of California, Berkeley and Visiting Professor in the Centre for Indian Studies in Africa (CISA) at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
